TANYA BENZAQUEN is the milliner and creative director of THE HAT BLOCK, formerly known as Hats by Tanya.
Born in England and raised in a few different countries, Tanya is an award-winning couture hat designer based in New York City, where she trained as a milliner at the Fashion Institute of Technology under legendary professor Ann Albrizio. Upon completing her studies Tanya launched her eponymous line, Hats by Tanya, a collection of hand-made one of a kind hats which sold at top NYC retailers including Henri Bendel and The Hat Shop.
Satisfying a growing interest in clothing design, Tanya went back to school to study Fashion Design, after which she completed a six month internship at Madina Vadache Couture. Upon her return to NYC, Tanya began working at Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week with Barbara Berman's backstage team, wardrobe assisting for a long list of designers including Oscar de la Renta, Jason Wu, Victoria Beckham, Marchesa, Zac Posen, and Project Runway. In 2013, Tanya embarked on four adventurous months in Paris where she interned at the Diane von Furstenberg and Mary Katrantzou showrooms, and worked backstage at Paris Fashion Week for designers Bibhu Mohapatra and Alexis Mabille.
With over fifteen years of millinery experience Tanya continues to create, in her unique signature style, bespoke hats and headpieces made entirely by hand, which fit as comfortably as they are chic and fashionable. Tanya has won two MILLI awards from the Headwear Information Bureau and New York Press and Buyers.
"A hat block is where it all begins. It's a beautifully carved piece of wood which serves as the basis for countless inspired shapes and possibilities..."
